Nazafarin Lofti’s abstract, mixed-media paintings and sculptures blend her interests infolk art and the subconscious with the visual language of manuscript illustrations and Persian miniatures. Working by collage and with acrylic, she creates sculptural paintings filled with objects she culls from her studio, ranging from staples to vinyl, and also creates impeccable figurative collages which she “draw[s] with scissors.” Influenced by the Surrealist technique of automatism—creating spontaneously from one’s random thoughts without pre-conception—Lotfi attempts to condense multiple experiences into a single, dense art object.
